Magic 8 Ball and Real's Harmony

A magic 8-ball attempts to answer the issue regarding Real's Harmony. Here's an excerpt:

"Isn’t RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser the same guy who four months ago pleaded with Apple to open the iPod to Real’s protected file format, claiming, “Apple’s (market) share will go down if they continue to do this. The only way to presently put songs on an iPod is to (buy) them from iTunes.”

WITHOUT A DOUBT."

Read more at Daring Fireball where current issues are dealt with in a humorous but deadly accurate way.

MSN back to 2MB

More V3 pics

Tons of Motorola RAZR V3 pics at Engadget!

LaunchBar and Butler

LaunchBar and Butler have both been updated recently. I've tried both in the past and they're both pretty good. I just prefer Quicksilver. All three would have their respective strengths and weakness. My suggestion is to try all three and see what's the best for your needs.

News aggregators

Microsoft and Google have created their own news aggregator sites. Google News has been around for quite some time while MSNBC Newsbot is the new kid on the block. Personally, I prefer Google News and the all text approach of Daily Rotation for tech news.

These news sites can be customized but to really have the power to choose, an RSS news reader is the answer.

Motorola V3 Razr review

v3razr
Already, there's a review of the Motorola V3 Razr. This could have been written earlier as there's no mention of iTunes support.

From Mobile-Review: "Summing up, we can say the following: the model is very convenient in every day usage. It is flat and you can wear it everywhere you want. The phone always attracted attention, though some people didn’t even recognize a phone in this device. Motorola succeed in producing a nice phone of the fashion class which will become popular very soon (I am sure that it will be in Russia). For those who need functions in the phone I recommend to wait for update version of triplets (v300, v500, v600)."

Check the review out for more fantastic pictures. The price is expected to be in the $600 range when the V3 comes out in September.

A SonyEricsson for iTunes too?

ThinkSecret has this rumor: "iSync 1.5 will reportedly add support for additional mobile devices; sources said the new version will synch information with newer phones from Motorola and Sony Ericsson. The improved phone support is believed to be the extent of the changes in iSync 1.5."

We now know that Motorola will be supporting iTunes so will the SonyEricsson P910 support iTunes too or will there be another newer phone?

iTunes in a cellphone

motorolav3

The Motorola V3 will be the first cellphone to use an iTunes mobile version.

"ROSEMONT, IL and CUPERTINO, Calif – 26 July 2004 -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) and Apple® (NASDAQ: AAPL) today announced they are partnering to enable millions of music lovers to transfer their favorite songs from the iTunes® jukebox on their PC or Mac® , including songs from the iTunes Music Store, to Motorola’s next-generation 'always with you' mobile handsets, via a USB or Bluetooth connection. Apple will create a new iTunes mobile music player, which Motorola will make the standard music application on all their mass-market music phones, expected to be available in the first half of next year."

Here's the press release.

Clean your cache

I'm using Cache Out X:

"Cache Out X (COX) is a utility for Mac OS X that specializes in deleting the cache files of the System and of Internet browsers. Additionally, it can delete virtual memory file(s), erase system history files, as well as cookies and Internet-related navigation/download history files. COX's Auto-Cleaner function cleans caches at log in or as scheduled by the user thanks to iCal integration. COX's secure deletion of Internet archives makes it especially suitable when using public access computers."

It sped up not only Opera, but my other OS X browsers as well.

Linksys wireless router upgrade

linksys_logo

I was surprised to see a WRT54G update at the VersionTracker MacOSX updates list. I was using a beta driver to sort things out regarding security but an official driver is of course very much welcome. I've already updated my router.

Here's what's new:

* Resolves issue with disabling firewall
* Added QoS function
* Added Port Triggering function
* Added L2TP option for WAN connection type
* Added ability to back up and restore configuration files
* Added Wireless isolation function
* Added ability to filter internal NAT redirection
* Added ability to restrict access to web GUI from wireless clients
* Added ability to filter IDENT port 113
* Resolves issue with HeartBeat WAN connection
* Added support for 40/56bit cipher to support old browsers to use https
* Resolves issue with PPTP passthrough
* Changed WPA Group Key renewal time range to 600~7200 seconds
* Added IGMP proxy support
* Added ability to allow web GUI access only through https or http

But of course, these updates are useless if one does not secure the router from free outsider use. You won't believe how many people do not even change the default router password.

PDAspotting: Bourne Supremacy

I saw two PDA's in Bourne Supremacy...

One was the Treo 270/300. That made me smile because it's already discontinued.

But what made me laugh was the iPaq (don't exactly know what model) which was used as a: fingerprint scanner! Someone put a finger print (on a piece of tape) on the screen and this was sent to the main computer database for identity verification. puhleeze. LOL. :D

I wish someone would use PDAs, or technology properly... probably something like what Trinity did when she used the correct exploit for a power grid in Matrix Reloaded. That made the hacking community smile with pride.

As for the movie. Two words: camera angles.

Camera angles were effectively used to bring the viewer into the movie. It's like you're there with the characters. In some cases, even the characters block your complete view of the scene. I find that more real than annoying -- which made action scenes believable and more intense.

MSN: 2GB free

MSN2GB

If you must have a 2GB email account, you have to set up an @msn.com email account.

To do this, startup MSN Explorer (it comes with Windows XP) and create your account. That's it.

From there, you can access your @msn.com account in www.hotmail.com. What's cool is, you can use any browser for that. That shot above was from Opera.

WHEN will Apple offer something similar?

The original's here. But here's the more creative version.

Picasa (WinXP) free at Google

Picasa

Picasa was once termed as the iPhoto for Windows. Picasa was recently acquired by Google, and now they're offering Picasa for free. So if you're into photography and photoblogging, check Picasa out.

Two favorites updated

Two of my favorite applications have been updated.

Opera 7.53 is out. It's basically a security fix release.

PulpFiction 1.0.1 is now available. It's the only RSS reader I use.

The new iPod

ipodtop5_20040719

Well, after just a few seconds the Apple Store's back up! And there you have the new iPod.

Apple Store's updating!

applestoresign

It's 1028PM Monday here (828AM EST) and Apple Store's updating their site! I copied that pic from their site... it's rare that I see those things a Apple.com. I guess in a little while, we'll get to see the new iPods for sale.

WinXP "cool" apps

Here are two WinXP equivalents of OS X apps we know and love...

1. AppRocket.
An application launcher. Press Alt+Space and type the first few letters of apps or files you're looking for, press enter to launch. Usually, the first in the list is what you're looking for.

2. Exposer for Windows.
Hide windows, Show all windows etc... by pressing hotkeys or moving the mouse to any of the four screen corners.

I'm not putting links to those apps because I feel that they are just copies of the OS X originals. They wouldn't have even been created if not seen in OS X.

Still, WinXP users will undoubtedly find them cool. The OS X versions are however, leagues ahead in elegance and performance.

The new iPod

040717_IpodNew_vl.vlarge

Here's the full article from Newsweek. Congratulations to Apple for this revolutionary device.

"Steve Jobs noticed something earlier this year in New York City. "I was on Madison," says Apple's CEO, "and it was, like, on every block, there was someone with white headphones, and I thought, 'Oh, my God, it's starting to happen'." Jonathan Ive, the company's design guru, had a similar experience in London: "On the streets and coming out of the tubes, you'd see people fiddling with it." And Victor Katch, a 59-year-old professor of kinesiology at the University of Michigan, saw it in Ann Arbor. "When you walk across campus, the ratio seems as high as 2 out of 3 people," he says."

Airport Express and Bluetooth

I knew it. Airport Express, Bluetooth, a Powerbook with iTunes, and Clie with Salling Clicker... works! I just featured an article at 1src about this.

New iPods to be announced

040717_COVER.320w
Seems like Newsweek has a story for the new iPods to be announced next week. There's no link to the actual article but the new iPod looks narrower, perhaps thinner, and has the new scroll wheel (the same type as that of the iPod mini). The screen is still black and white. I'm assuming it would be at 60GB now.

New Gmail Features

gmail small

New Gmail features. It just gets better every time!

Import Contacts
You've made a list. You've checked it twice. Now you never have to check it again. Move all your contacts from Yahoo! Mail, Outlook, and others to Gmail in just a few clicks. Then simply rely on our auto-complete feature to prefill all your addresses for you. Keep all your contacts in one place and keep in touch with all of them using Gmail.

Signature options
From the settings page, create a signature that's automatically added to the end of all your outgoing messages. Change it as often as you like, but always get the last word.

Safari browser support
Everybody's gone surfin' now Mac OS X's Safari is surfing Gmail as well (versions 1.2.1 and newer).

I, Robot

irobot

Acting, action, and effects make I, Robot a must see summer movie. It's about a robotics scientist who committed suicide. However, his friend, Detective Del Spoon, thinks otherwise.

I,Robot is based on a collection of short stories by the late Isasc Asimov. I read the Foundation series but not the Robot Novels yet. Maybe it's time to add these to my reading list.

Back to Mozilla and Palm Desktop

palmdesktop

I noticed that Firefox slows down significantly after a few minutes of using it. So it's back to Mozilla for me. I even downloaded the 1.8alpha2 version to test it. It has some slight problems but it's way faster than Firefox.

I'm back to Palm Desktop too. I found a way to sync with OS X without using The Missing Sync. iSync works too but I had to reinstall the iSync Palm Conduit from Apple. There's no MS mounting and iApp support but I'm floored that syncing is as fast as that in a PC. Anyway, I'll write about this soon at 1src. That article will be forwarded to the major Mac and gadget sites.

G5 to power new iMac

081902GatewayProfile4

From MacMinute: "During Apple's third quarter conference call, CFO Peter Oppenheimer revealed that the next generation iMac, which will begin shipping in September, will be powered by the PowerPC G5 processor. He said an IBM chip shortage was behind the delay of the new Apple desktops. Earlier this month, Apple quietly announced that it is no longer taking orders for the current iMac and that a new model will be introduced in September."

By the way, that's a 2002 Gateway Profile that was supposedly out to "kill" the iMac. I put that picture because rumors are the new iMac would have a one-piece LCD/CPU setup with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. However, I think the new iMac would have an aluminum-encased.

LianLi V1000

lianliv1000

LianLi has always been creating great looking aluminum cases. This time however, they've outdone themselves. This is perhaps the best PC case I've seen. Given the chance, I'll buy with without hesitation.

Read the review at PC Unleash.

Opera One-Click setups

safari_skin

Here's a nice page at Opera. This is perfect for those who are in the transition phase. The pic up there is Opera using a Safari skin.

"Opera's look and feel can be changed with one-click setups. These setup files bundle popular browser settings so you can select a style that suits you best.

Setups can change Opera's skin, toolbars, menus, keyboard shortcuts, and mouse gestures."

Secunia reports four more

secunia

Secunia reports four more IE vulnerabilities.

All the more reason to stay with any one of these: Firefox, Opera, Safari, or Camino. Mozilla and Netscape are ok too, if you don't mind the bloat.

King Arthur

guinevere

I actually loved the movie! The action scenes were well planned, the characters were familiar yet different, and the acting was just right.

The storyline was a welcome surprise. I'm beginning to believe this version of King Arthur rather than the ones I grew up with.

Quicksilver update

Quicksilver b25r2 is now available and adds a number of enhancements and bug fixes.

Quicksilver is a launcher... of basically anything you want to start-up. Just press Cmd+Space, type a few letters and press Return to launch (press tab to find other options). I hardly ever launch anything from the dock or from the finder now.

For those who have seen Tiger's Spotlight, Quicksilver is the closest equivalent of it.

100 million songs!

100M

100 million songs have been legally downloaded from the iTunes Music Store.

"Kevin Britten of Hays Ellis, Kansas downloaded Somersault (Dangermouse remix) by Zero7; the 100 millionth song purchased from the iTunes music store. He will receive a 17-inch PowerBook, a 40GB iPod, and a gift certificate for 10,000 iTunes songs to create the ultimate music library for his new iPod. In addition we awarded 50 special 20GB iPods — one to the purchaser of each 100,000th song downloaded between 95 million and 100 million songs."

***
I've decided a while ago that I wouldn't join the contest. It was enough for me to have bought music and have added to this 100M milestone. I love my Powerbook, and it's been my all around workstation. I thank Apple for increasing my productivity and for making work fun. Congratulations to Kevin Britten! Can't wait to see his celebrity playlist.

To a frustrated novice Clie programmer

th55

I feel your frustration. In our case, it's the site. Cliesource was doing well and in fact was contributing a lot to the Clie community until Sony pulled out of the race.

We decided to widen our reach and not only support the Clie community but the entire Palm-powered community. We lost a lot of members but new ones are coming in. So later now it's not that bad after all. All it takes is time, patience, and dedication to what you love to do.

My advice is hang in there. The Clie is still fertile ground for you to practice and hone your programming skills. Once you're no longer a novice then it's time to move on to the other Palm platforms. If you really believe in what you're doing, everything will fall into their proper places. You'll only thank yourself later on for not giving up. :)

Mac Viruses

virex

Just because the majority of PC's in the world are Windows-based doesn't mean Macs are less tempting for a virus writer. On the contrary, if I were a virus writer, I'd go and try to write a virus for the Mac and get props for being the first to be successful. That's a "worthwhile" quest rather than tackling the latest Windows vulnerability.

Quite simply, there are no viruses in the Mac because the Mac OS was built with security in mind. It is not that easy for a virus creator to unleash his creation on the Mac world.

It is not the market share that's the reason behind this but rather the environment -- in which the virus will have an almost zero chance to thrive in.

I used to believe in the market-share argument but I read this article some time ago and it change my perspective. I invite you to read it too.

And thanks again to winexprt of 1src for teaching me that the word "virii" does not exist.

Firefox (Windows) Security Patch

For those who are using Firefox for Windows...

"On July 7 (yesterday) a security vulnerability affecting browsers for the Windows operating system was posted to Full Disclosure, a public security mailing list. On the same day, the Mozilla security team confirmed the report of this security issue affecting the Mozilla Application Suite, Firefox, and Thunderbird and discussed and developed the fix at Bugzilla bug 250180. We have confirmed that the bug affects only users of Microsoft's Windows operating system. The issue does not affect Linux or Macintosh users."

Read more at Mozilla.

Cleaning the Server

I went to the office today to check the server. Well, it's not exactly a server but rather I call it the-computer-where-you-save-your-files-in. It's where we put files so that others can use it for their projects. These files range from presentations, to pictures, to sound clips.

The first thing I did was to to make folders with names such as ads, posters, projects, students, and faculty. From there, I just dragged and dropped pictures in iPhoto and files saved everywhere in the common space.

I looked at my iTunes playlists too and stared in surprise at lots of song files which I didn't now I have and so bought again in the iTunes Music Store. This was about a year ago when iTunes was still quite unknown to the public.

I gave up for the day. I managed to reward myself and installed and tried out Opera and Firefox -- just to see how they work in a 10.2.8 system. Both browsers looked great but Opera still performed faster.

Movie Mistakes Website

Really now, give me one movie that has no mistake in it? We watch movies to be entertained, to have a suspension of disbelief, to experience surprise and suspense, and to escape for just a few hours from our daily grind. Watching movies while being in-touch with the reality around us just utterly destroys the purpose of being there in the first place.

"Selling" Gmail accounts

gmail small

Just heard from a friend of mine who sent out a Gmail invite... He attached a joke message: "That'll be $50." After that, he discovered all his remaining invites are gone.

Gmail invites cannot be sold as stated in the new user agreement. What's impressive is the search-and-terminate engine they used to detect my friend's note. Obviously, it was done by a computer and that goes to show how a computer can't differentiate a fact from a joke... and shows that Gmail's Google Ads cannot read our email.

Mail Database

Lots of Mail

I'm playing around with Thunderbird now but Mail is still my mail database. I leave mail in the server when I have it checked by Thunderbird then from time to time, have Apple Mail retrieve them. I thought I'd post a picture of a three digit mail count that a few of us might never get to see.

Spiderman 2

MJ from Sony Pictures

Finally saw the movie yesterday! It's a great study of the humanity of a superhero. I especially liked the subway train rescue.

Camera angles in the numerous fight scenes were well done. They seem to be live versions of Marvel Comic's dramatic comic book panels. It was done the Marvel way, so to speak.

I loved Alex Ross' artwork too. The opening credits created a cool way to give a summary of what happened in Spiderman 1. It showed images and names part by part, as if you're scanning through a comic book page and seeing those images flash by your eyes.

Spiderman_car

I was also happy with something else. If you take a look at the Quicktime trailer, go to the scene where the car crashes through the glass window towards Peter and MJ. There was a shot there where we see the car flying through but Peter and MJ are nowhere to be seen on the floor . I'm happy because they removed that in the final cut.

Can't wait for the DVD! A must have for any collection.

ICELink 1.1 for iPod

icelink

Spotted by Engadget is the ICELink for iPod.

"ICELink is the ultimate solution in high quality iPod vehicle interconnection.

ICE-Link takes the place of your external CD Changer and it operates like one. iPod starts when CD changer is selected on a supported factory or aftermarket radio, and paused when other source is selected. Track control from radio and steering wheel controls are provided."

I looked at the site and saw these selling for about $200. No support for my car yet, though. Also, iPodLounge has a review of v1.0.

Juan's Back!

Juan is a former student who's now into web design. He switched and now has a Powerbook.

Welcome back Juan! Honestly, you got me worried with your silence. Glad to know that it's "just" switching sickness.

Google bans GMail sales

BBC news reports "GMail sellers beware, Google wants to stop people profiting from the trade in popular e-mail addresses.

Search giant Google has updated the program policy for GMail on Monday adding clauses that ban the sale, trading, reselling or exploiting of GMail accounts for commercial purposes. "

Good move for Google. It just does not feel it's right to sell a gift for some profit.

Can't wait to try out Dashboard? Well, here's something I found at MacMegasite...

New iMacs in September

MacMinute reports that there will be new iMacs this September.

For those who are going to switch but feel like the 'books are too a great leap, an iMac or even an eMac is a good place to start. Desktop Macs are a great place to play around with and getting your feet wet in. Once you know your way around then it's time to "upgrade" to an iBook or a Powerbook. Not only will you know your way around but you'll also know how to take care of it.

In school, I have about 30 Macs that I regularly maintain. These range from Bondi iMacs to the new iMacs. I learned how to work with OS 9 on a Lime iMac, and began to explore OS X in a G3 PowerMac (which we call a server but it's actually our file storage/backup computer). When I bought a Powerbook, I knew what to do with it already. All the mistakes that I have encountere and have since learned from are now are now the knowledge I have to keep my Powerbook's software and hardware pristine.

Now the exciting part is, what will the new iMacs look like.

(And I still wish I have a G5 PowerMac and one of those new displays near me...)

Need some new website tips?

Starting a new website? Here's what I sent to someone asking about some tips:

Good to hear that you have friends to help you out. Friends are the most reliable but can be the most uncooperative too. So you have to really find out their dedication-level to the site.

As for the news, it's ok to feel lazy at the start. You'll get up to speed later on. How do I post news... I look around and build a bookmark list of sites. I check them once in a while for news and either summarize or quote some lines. NEVER forget to credit the site where you got news from. All Palm-related sites help one another so we link to each other too.

Editorials are a different matter. These are articles that you write and would bear the views of the entire site. Personal views should be clearly indicated. If you need to write a 100% personal view on a matter, I suggest not to put it in the site as this would be a conflict of interest. Remember that though it's your site, you have other people to take care of.

That's it for now. Start bit by bit, Cliesource was not built in a day but other members in 1src sadly are in the "I want it now! Now!" frame of mind.

Oh yeah, be ready to deal with trolls. I'm afraid they're a necessary evil in every website.

Good luck!

July 01, 2004

vBulletin problems

Recently, Cliesource was hacked because the site was using an old version of vBulletin. Just a few minutes ago, I heard that Daily Gadget was hacked too. It was all the more sad because I sent a PM to one of the mods at DG warning them that the site could be next. I do wish them all the best in putting back the site together again.

I still could not get the thrill that's associated with hacking. It's just plain bragging rights. Too much energy is spent with empty satisfaction and results.

Dashboard vs. Konfabulator

This I believe is the definitive source of info regarding the whats and hows of Dashboard and Konfabulator. Daring Fireball shows us all the gory details.

When I read the following

When I read the following article, I was thinking, how good really is Connect? The source of the songs is the lifeblood of any portable music player.

From MacMinute:
"Sony takes aim at iPod with new players

July 1, 2004 - 00:30 EDT by Larry Angell - Sony has announced two new hard drive-based digital music players that appear to be the closest thing to a threat that Apple's iPod has encountered. Sony's NW-HD1 Network Walkman weighs less than 4 ounces, making it the world's smallest portable audio device built with a 1.8-inch, 20GB hard drive, according to the company.
