Google Desktop for Macs

Google plans desktop search tool for Macs:
Google plans to release a version of Google Desktop for Macs, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said on Friday...

@MacMinute

This is a perfect app to use until Tiger with Spotlight is released.

UPDATE: Apparently, Google CEO Eric Schmidt was miquoted. He said that Google could create Google Desktop for OS X but from the ground up because of OS architecture differences. They intend to do it but as of now there's no working on it.

So I believe, Tiger's Spotlight is on a spotlight of its own by next year.

Weird browser issue

I've been experiencing this in two browsers: Firefox and Safari --- clicking on a link (or a bookmark item) would show a "<URL> could not be found" error. However, trying the link again opens up the page without problems.

This does not always happen but it's quite annoying. Has anyone experienced this and has found a solution?

It happens randomly with whatever internet connection, after sleeping or fully awake and connected. My hunch is a mouse pointer focusing bug.

UPDATE: MacFixIt has just reported on the problem. They're not sure yet but it seems to be a DNS-related issue tied with Security Update 2004-09-30.

1001

1001 is a desktop client to be used in conjunction with Flickr, the online photo-sharing website. 1001 not only uploads photos to your Flickr account, it notifies you anytime new photos from either your contacts, everyone, or your favorite tags are uploaded. 1001 allows you to step into the stream of photos passing through Flickr and to quickly see what's new at the moment. Just run the app in the background and if triggered, 1001 pops up a small unobtrusive window to notify you of new photos.

@
kung-foo.tv

I still haven't played around with Flickr opting for two other galleries: .mac and coppermine. 1001 looks like a nice app. It's by the people who created ecto so that in itself is a good reason to try 1001.

Tiger sneak peek

0,1311,sz=1&i=75275,00.jpg

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Apple Computer Inc. on Tuesday offered a crowd of developers, consultants and IT managers here a preview of Mac OS 10.4, the next version of the company's Macintosh operating system, code-named Tiger. The software is due in spring 2005, Apple managers said.

from
eWeek via Anandtech.

I like seeing the screenshots for Automator, Dashboard, Spotlight and Safari RSS. Of note is Safari's private browsing and RSS features. Add date sort for all articles, plus NePHP support and I'll make Safari my ONLY browser.

I was hoping for a January release as I will be at the Macworld Conference by then... but whenever the release date would be, I would surely upgrade to Tiger.

Firefox 1.0rc1

get.gif

VersionTracker has announced the availability of Firefox 1.0rc1. It's available either at VersionTracker or in the Firefox FTP site. Also, here's the rough changelog.

Firefox is still my browser of choice. I've been regularly trying nightly builds (both official and powerbook's) just to see what's new or broken. So far, the experience has been great.

Just a note. This is a release candidate. There are bugs that still need to be reported. If you don't want to have anything to do with bug reporting or product testing then go with v1.0. It's still a good version.

Software updates

Three updates are already available: iTunes 4.7, QuickTime 6.5.2, and Apple Remote Desktop Admin 2.1.

PSP: 19800 yen!

PSP Standard

Sony will release PSP at 19,800 yen. The price was a surprise to most people as industry has been predicting that Sony will release this at around US$250-US$300 given the high specs of PSP as a mutlimedia device. Although the cost is not known to the public, it is quite safe to say that Sony will take a loss with every set sold at least at the beginning. As much as Nintendo wants to deny this, this will be a direct competition with Nintendo's GBA DS.

The full specs have also been announced most of which is already known except it is not confirmed that in addition Sony's ATRAC3 plus, PSP will support MP3 natively.

Details of the announcements:

Price: 19,800 yen.
Release Date: Dec-12-2005
Package includes: PSP, AC Adapter and battery pack

Sony will also sell bundled set called PSP Value Pack for 24,800 yen which includes the following:

* PSP
* AC Adapter
* Battery Pack
* MS Duo (32MB)
* Headphone (with remote control)
* Softcase and strap

The following accessories will go on sales on the same day:

* MS Duo (32MB) - 2,800 yen
* AC Adapter - 3,500 yen
* Battery Pack - 4,800 yen
* Headphone (with remote control) - 2,800 yen
* Softcase and carrying strap - 2,000 yen

iPod Sock

102604ipod_sock.jpg

I'd rather mill around the infants section of our local department store and choose socks from there rather than get one of these. This is nothing new though, as there are tiny socks for cellphones.

Next in the bandwagon

Yellow Submarine

Now that we've seen the black iPod, I'm wondering which group will jump into the bandwagon next...

Wouldn't it be nice to have a special edition yellow iPod for the Beatles?

If the Beatles is the next band (of course after settling the lawsuits and stuff) then the iPod is assured of portable music player supremacy.

iTunes 4.7

indextop47mac10262004.jpg

With the announcement of the new iPod Photo comes the latest version of iTunes.

Wondering how you’re going to get all your digital photographs into iPod Photo? iTunes 4.7. The new version lets you import your images directly into iPod Photo from a folder on the hard drive of your Mac or PC. Spent time organizing your photos using iPhoto on a Mac or either Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 on a PC? iTunes 4.7 rewards your diligence by importing the albums you’ve created in iPhoto or collections created in Album or Elements. You’ll be able to choose them from the Photos menu on iPod Photo.

iPod Photo

indextop20041026.jpg

The iPod Photo has been announced. Rumors were true after all!

A delight for the ears. A feast for the eyes. Though it’s no bigger than a pack of playing cards and weighs in at just over 6 ounces, iPod Photo delivers a one-two sensory punch. Letting you carry an entire library of your favorite music — up to 15,000 songs — or enough photos — as many as 25,000 — to fill nearly 200 slide trays or cover nearly 5,000 square feet of wall space. Got a really big den?

The newest member of the iPod family, iPod Photo comes in two sizes: a 40GB model, available for $499, and a capacious 60GB model that sells for $599. Both feature a razor sharp LCD display that lets you see your photos in vivid color — 65,536 colors, to be exact. And with its built-in backlighting, you’ll be able to admire those photos indoors or out.

U2 black iPod

indexfrontbackse10262004.jpg

Apple has released a U2 special edition black iPod. Perfect for U2 fans.

Like no other, iPod U2 Special Edition stands out. Jet black, it bears a prominent red Apple Click Wheel and, on the flip side, the autographs of each U2 band member. Available for just $349, it comes with an exclusive U2 poster and, of course, the signature white iPod earbuds. As an extra special treat, it includes an iTunes Music Store coupon you can use to get $50 off your purchase of “The Complete U2.” As unique as the iPod itself, this digital boxed set brings together an amazing 400 U2 tracks. Songs span the band’s celebrated career. From “Boy” to “War” to “The Joshua Tree” to “Zooropa” to the soon-to-be-released “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb,” it includes every U2 album and brings us over 25 rare and unreleased tracks. Look for it on the iTunes Music Store at the end of November.

Engadget Podcast 07

Engadget Podcast

I woke up with the podcast conveniently in iTunes. The strange thing is, iPodderX is not running at all. I'll investigate more on what app's causing the automatic download of the podcast. Not that I don't like it, it's just that I want to know what runs when I'm asleep. UPDATE: iPodderX has downloaded the podcast because it has an option to automatically download new content... even if it's not running.

Anyway, here's what's inside 07:

powerbook's Firefox
I've been using a Firefox build by mozillaZine member, powerbook. These builds are optimized for the PowerPC 7450 processor (newer G4). I like the blue globe icon too. So far no problems except that I still cannot install TabBrowserExtensions. Actually I cannot install this in any Firefox version for the Mac.

RSS Readers

I found a list of OS X RSS readers at Pure Mac. I didn't know that there was already, a variety of RSS readers... from menubar resident ones to news tickers, each reader has something different to offer. I was able to test all of the available RSS readers... and needless to say, I was overwhelmed. In the end, I chose NewsFire. Quite simply, it's still the most elegant RSS reader out there.

NewsFire 0.25

Not sure what's new but there's a new version out!

I also found a NewsFire forum.

NewsFire crash

I left NewsFire running and was surprised to see a submit bug window when I returned. I tried Shrook 2 and it froze too. I guess there are some badly coded RSS feeds out there.

NewsFire is a great app as I've written before but when left on its own (and assuming there are no problems), the news feeds are pretty much overwhelming. Sure, the top news would be first on the list but you'd be left with other news at the bottom. I haven't figures out how to sort the news individually if there's an option to do that at all...

In the meantime, I went back to PulpFiction and spent some time designing a stylesheet. Besides finally having what I want in a stylesheet, the whole process let me brush up on the little I know of CSS too.

Delicious Library

Delicious Library

An app that I'm excited about, and will surely get, is Delicious Library.

Run your very own library from your home or office using our impossibly simple interface. Delicious Library's digital shelves act as a visual card-catalog of your books, movies, music and video games. A scan of a barcode is all Delicious Library needs to add an item to your digital shelves, downloading tons of info from the internet like the author, release date, current value, description, and even a high-resolution picture of the cover. Import your entire library using our exclusive full-speed iSight video barcode scanner, our Flic® Wireless Laser Bar Code Scanner, or (the slow way) entering the titles by hand. Once you have all of your items in your Mac, you can browse though your digital shelves, check stuff out to friends using Apple's built-in Address Book and calendar, and find new items to read, watch, and play using Library's recommendations. Delicious Library is coming very soon, so bear with us. We promise it will be worth the wait!

iPod to car

_images_ipod2car-1.jpg

iPod your car, even if you can't afford a BMW:

There are a lot of people out there, after all, who can’t afford a
Beemer, so why shouldn’t they be able to iPod their car, too? Crazy custom mounts are all well and good, but if you want something a little less, er, intense, the iPod2car hooks into your aftermarket stereo system, regardless of car model (so long as the stereo’s compatible), and track (and fast) forward and back can be controlled from the head or the steering wheel controls. Not bad, but the price is a little steep ($200) yet; hopefully we’ll see more stuff like this coming out in the future on the cheap.

[Via
Autoblog] @Engadget

Aha! An iPod to car alternative! $200 is quite expensive but I've emailed iPod2Car just to check if their product is compatible with my car system. It makes me wonder too if there are other cheaper alternatives in the Philippines... where they can do ANYTHING you'd like to customize on-board sound.

I currently use an iTrip. Though it does its job well, battery drain is high, and the sound quality is cassette-tape-like.

UPDATE: I just got an email saying that the iPod2Car is not compatible with my system.

People's PC

A People's PC will be offered in the Philippines soon. The specs are as follows:

...Intel Celeron chip, 128.MB memory, 40 gigabytes hard disk, 15-inch color monitor, 56 Kbps modem, and CD-ROM, keyboard and speakers...

The OS is not included. Unavailable information are the brands of the motherboard, monitor, and hard disk, type of video card, and speed of the CPU. The price of the People's PC is PhP16,000 (about $290).

The People's PC program was launched by the Philippine government in partnership with Intel.

Lycos 10GB email.

Lycos 10GB email.:
Mmm, Lycos UK has introduced a 10GB premium email service. It's not free (and they haven't updated the Web site yet - tsk) but what makes it interesting and perhaps a real alternative to GMail is that it comes with a free Online File Storage Drive included as standard. That's ...

@The Red Ferret Journal

If Lycos can offer 10GB of space, why can't Apple offer more than 250MB of .mac space? 10GB... this should be something my friends Sammy and Shaun might want to consider.

Flash iPod?

There are rumors about a flash-memory-based iPod. Will these be small capacity iPods, or bumped up iPod minis? Well, we won't have to wait long as they're supposed to be announced by the end of this year.

So I looked around the office and noticed that the server's monitor is really idle most of the time. I dug out my DV connector, wacom pad, and spare keyboard and got to work. SplashPower

SplashPower

Splashpower ready to solve the charging issue

Splashpower are gearing up to finally release their SplashPad charging mat.  The mouse-sized pad allows users of cellphones, PDAs, and other portable, recharcheable devices to simply place them on the pad for recharding rather than plug them all in separately.  Great idea, right?  Only problem is that the SplashPad requires the use of SplashModules, thin little receiver modules that fit onto the portable devices to be recharged.  It would have been nice if the SplashPad worked on its own without having to put stickers all over our devices, but we’ll still give this thing a try. Could solve some serious wiring (and more serious electrical fire) issue we always seem to battle, what with about 800 adapters under the desk.

@
Engadget

This is a great innovative way to charge our gadgets. I just hope there's an easy way for the consumers to attach the SplashModules on their own. It's also nice to imagine a cooling pad that doubles as a charging pad for our 'Books.

NewsFire

NewsFire is my new default RSS reader. The other readers have crashed on me and NewsFire has yet to disappoint me. So far it's doing its job well... simply and elegantly.

Here are the features I like (from the NewsFire site)...

-like a turbocharged bookmark menu for your news sites.

-animated just like iChat, so feeds swoop around as news is discovered.

-brimming with Aqua-beauty and a rich, dynamic user experience

-intensely focused on simplicity... snubs complexity for a minimalist interface that is intuitive, unobtrusive, and a total joy to use

-supports the two major feed formats - RSS and Atom

-imports and exports OPML, a standard bookmark-like file format for news feeds

And it's free too.

New Targus ChillHub

_common_images_0646533664364176.jpg

New Targus ChillHub chills Apple Laptops:
Targus attempts to solve multiple Apple laptop issues with its new ChillHub released today, which includes two fans to keep the machine cool as well as a four-port USB 2.0 hub for all those extra devices you have (you do have thousands of USB devices, right?). It can run on its own AC adapter or be powered by the computer, so it’s travel-friendly (in the sense that you only have to lug around one extra large object, not to), and at $50, the price ain’t too bad either. On the other hand, Chillhub is a little overkill unless you’re a computer hypochondriac and think your laptop is going to melt without fans blowing at it every which way. Or if you run folding@home (which you should be). Anyway, it measures measures 11.75 x 9-inches, is shipping today, and is certain to ruin that whole stylie PowerBook aesthetic you’ve got going on on your desk.

This is fine if you don't mind the extra noise and bulk. I prefer a Koolsink. (Incidentall, the Koolsink XL, for Windows laptops, are now available.)

I currently have an iTrip but with it, the iPod's battery drains fast. This could be a great solution (but Kensington didn't give it a fancy name or anything... just "iPod FM Transmitter/Auto Charger).

Getting an iBook?

For those who are going to switch to the Mac platform because of the new iBooks -- congratulations on the right decision.

Currently, what's going for the Powerbooks are screen resolution, Firewire 800, DV-out, S-Video out, faster video (NVIDIA Go5200, ATI Radeon 9700), and of course the aluminum case.

Weigh your needs carefully.

If you must upgrade your hard drive - by yourself - then check out what MCE has just announced.

Black iPods

Apple will answer the calls for a black iPod next month, though, but it’s not what you think. No, it’s not one of those iPod tattoos, but it might be just as bizarre; know those new iPod commercials featuring U2’s new single? Well the black iPods will be special U2 edition ones. In addition to the color change the iPods will come preloaded with U2’s new album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, as well as selected hits and other old tracks from the Irish rockers (and we use the term rocker loosely).

The U2 iPods are due out November 23, but should be announced October 26 at the San Jose shindig Apple just sent out the invites for.

@

Will it come in pure black? Or will it come in black and silver? If it's the latter, and if I'd get one, I wouldn't mind giving it a brushed-metal look again.

Shrook 2 is a next-generation news reader that offers advanced features with a clean interface modeled after iTunes and the Address Book. It supports all versions of RSS, as well as the current draft of Atom.

The article also mentions PulpFiction, NewsMac, and NetNewsWire. I suggest that all five be tested and checked to see what best fits your needs.

For my needs, I've dropped PulpFiction in favor or Shrook 2. However, NewsFire is a very, very close alternative.

Nock-Ten

Typhoon Nock-Ten is coming in and hopefully, it will miss Guam. Classes have been called off for Tuesday and most probably Wednesday. Our school is already secure against the typhoon. My computers in the lab have been covered by tarp while the voltage regulators, wires, and power extensions have been lifted off the floor. At home, we've already stocked up on food and water, batteries, and butane.

What's scary is that it's sunny and warm (in the 30's) during the whole day. That means the rain and wind will come all too suddenly by Wednesday. Nock-Ten is just moving at 6 MPH but its damaging winds (about 105 MPH) extend outward up to 170 miles from its center.

RSS for Mac OS X Roundtable

RSS

RSS for Mac OS X Roundtable:
Thoro writes "There is an
unusual interview with the authors of the five major RSS clients for OS X: NetNewsWire, NewsFire, NewsMac, PulpFiction and Shrook. Safari RSS, Apple, the hype around RSS and the role of the news aggregator in the future are discussed. It's also hinted that the performance problems of RSS may be overblown. It is a breath of fresh air to see so many competitors come together to talk civily and not to better gang up on another."

@Slashdot

Fantastic interviews!

Adium X 0.7 available

AdiumX
Adium X, the main IM app I use, has been updated. The contacts window alone is a very welcome change!

A lot has changed in this release, so be sure to take a few moments to explore the new options and adjust. The contact list has gained a ton of new features, including the ability to display user icons, service icons, away messages, group gradients, and more. We've also added a new style of list called "Group Bubbles" which we're very happy with. Because of the extent of the contact list changes, your current list layout & theme settings won't transfer over into the new version, and old theme files will no longer work. We look forward to seeing the cool layouts and themes our users will create with the new options in 0.7 :)

Linkshelf

promo.gif
I've suddenly remembered that there was an online bookmarks site I was using regularly. I checked it out and the site's still up! It's at Linkshelf. It has a simple interface made up of categories (or shelves) that you can move around. It might not be for everyone but it's free.

I believe I eventually dropped Linkshelf in favor of my own HTML bookmarks list. I created a list and let Opera, Firefox, or Mozilla open it in the sidebar.

And I remembered something more... there was another site I used back when I was craving for a Bondi iMac but couldn't afford it. The site's already down but it's cached by the waybackmachine. Check out imacfloppy.com where they used to offer 3MB of free space.

Sushi USB Drives

One 128MB tomago, kudasai:
Sushi drives

We’ve seen USB Flash drives come in all
shapes and sizes, but the new SolidAlliance (they brought us the USB duck drives) sushi drives set a new standard in conjoining the Japanese obsession with plastic food and our obsession with weird USB drives. Unfortunately your tekka maki only comes in sizes from 32 to 128MB, so we may hold out until they hook up some 512MB+ fugu drives.

[Via
Akihabara News] @ Engadget

Being a fan of Japanese food, I believe this is the best USB drive incarnation I've seen. After a while, people will not be buying the USB drives for it's function, but how they look like. Hmmm... should I begin collecting 32MB drives?

Knoll Laptop Stand

This looks interesting. I've been attaching a full keyboard and using a mouse with my Powerbook lately. This stand would certainly look great with my setup.

Back on track

I've finally found some time to blog! Most of my time has been spent doing important and immediate stuff (read as: grades due) for my real work. Not doing those and doing more of my preferred work might end up losing my ability to blog.

I was able to put up interesting news at 1src (which were done in-between classes). The entries were SharkSwipe, the real deal behind the TJ27 IR Port Issue, Tome Raider beta, Palm Doc Converter, Clie Date on Status, and the Treo 650 page found at palmOne.

Now back on track with some apps I've been playing around with...

Got Firefox?

Get Firefox
It's a tough decision but, I've dropped Opera in favor of Firefox.

My combination of tools now are: Firefox, Mail, and PulpFiction. Sure, Firefox is a memory hog but it gets my work done faster. Add Quicksilver into the mix and you won't need Bookmarks anymore.

Opera for Mac will eventually be coming out with a Preview Release but Firefox development and support is so phenomenal that I only see Firefox leaving everyone behind.

Powerbook antenna

5.5dbiantc.jpg
A WiFi antenna for the Powerbook is now available at QuickerTek. I'm sure this is meant for use outside to amplify the signal you're getting (or stealing).

Free GarageBand loops

300 free GarageBand loops are now available for .mac members!

Honestly, I haven't played around with Garage Band... I tried a long time ago but I easily got addicted to it. I guess my fear is, I might get too immersed with. Digital music has always fascinated me. During our Amiga days, we were astounded by the stereo quality sounds the Amiga was able to generate (this was a time when the Soundblaster for the PC was still not widely available). I recall Dynamic Drums was our favorite!

I'll download the loops this weekend. I'll take a peek at what I've been missing.

Vertigo

I just saw the exclusive extended version of the U2 iPod ad. Another fantastic work... both for U2 and the people behind the iPod ads. Visit the iTunes Music Store. The video's there.

RSS ads?!

engadget rss ad

Engadget is now featuring ads in their RSS feeds. An example is the one on top and I don't like this one bit. Just look at the wording... since when are free items brought to us by someone else?

Maybe Engadget is in need of other sources of income but let those stay onsite and not on the RSS feed! If they're losing hits on their site, maybe their feed should be modified a bit.

Engadget puts their whole article in the feed. I suggest just using excerpts from the main article and providing a link to the main article like what most RSS feeds are doing.

17-inch laptops not preferred

No one buying 17-inch laptops:
toshiba media center pc
We know this is hard to believe, but people haven’t exactly been snapping up those ginormous 17-inch widescreen laptops. At least according to an analyst with DisplaySearch, who says that sales of 17-inch laptops sales have been “slowing dramatically” while sales of 15-inch widescreen lappies are all zoom zoom (so it’s not like consumers aren’t digging on the widescreen thing). Maybe they’re just holding out for someone to introduce an even more backbreaking, even less portable 19-inch laptop. We know we are.
@Engadget

I don't know but, maybe they're talking about 17" Windows laptops? I have a 17" Powerbook for 11 months now and I can say that this is the best computer I've ever owned.

Quicksilver vβ31 (1582)

Quicksilver window
I was about to call it a day when I was alerted that there's a Quicksilver update. Quicksilver is a launcher. Press a pre-defined hotkey (I prefer command+space) and then type the first few letters of the application's name. Press return to launch that application. It's as easy as that. (In my screenshot, I pressed "ad." Adium was the first choice but then Adobe Photoshop and Address Book were alternative choices.)

I believe every Mac user should try out this application. It's already a must-have for me and I think I find it actually tedious to use a Mac without Quicksilver.

Quicksilver just keeps on getting better!

Comment spam

Comment spam plagues many sites, my site is not an exception. However, I've been using MT-Blacklist for quite some time and it's very effective. An email is sent to you for each comment posted at your site. As a result, you can begin filtering through the comments. If there's spam, the spammer and its comments are easily banned for good. Installation of this plugin can be a bit tricky but the site provides the info you'll need. Spread the word around to all MovableType users out there.

GMail Drive Shell Extension

GMail Drive Shell Extension:
krmpradeep writes "GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium. GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to."
@ Slashdot

It never ceases to amaze me how people find other ways to use a Gmail account! This is nice for Windows users but I think Google would block this and create their own alternative. I sometimes use Gmail as my emergency file storage, but I use it the old way... I email the file to myself. I have made a "File" label too so whenever I send me a file, I label it as "File."

Well, this whole thing is basically what iDisk could do and I still hope that Apple would ramp up the storage space available. It's now 125MB but more space is always welcome.

Path Finder 3.2.2

PathFindermainBrowser.jpg

What took much of my time was Path Finder 3.2.2. Quite simply, Path Finder is an OS X Finder replacement. I'm currently testing Path Finder before I decide if I need to pay $34.95 for the nagfree version. So far, the results are impressive. In fact, I've already deleted Finder (but not after making a backup).

Cocoatech, the developers of Path Finder has this to say about Path Finder and Panther:

It’s true that Apple has rolled a lot of improvements into Panther’s Finder, but we respectfully feel that Path Finder still has a place in a Panther world. Just a few of the reasons:

1. As far as we know, the Panther Finder will not have any of the built-in applications that Path Finder has, like:
* Light image editor
* PDF viewer
* Text editor
* Hex viewer
* Disk image creator
* Terminal
* File reporter
2. The Path Navigator, which allows you to jump “up” in your hard drive quickly and easily. Most useful.
3. Power of choice: Path Finder gives you the option of turning off the brushed metal look that Panther’s Finder has. You can also customize the way that Path Finder looks until the geek police come and drag you away.
4. The Drop Stack in Path Finder allows you to "pause" drag-and-drop operations.
5. Path Finder 3 also gives you most of Panther’s Finder’s features right now, like:
* The action menu
* Colored file labels (for a long time, actually)
* Path Finder's “Shelf” (equivalent to Panther’s “Places”)

BluePhoneElite

BluePhoneElite used to be called BluePhoneMenu. This application lets you connect to your cellphone via Bluetooth. Once connected, you can go to the Call Center and SMS Center which is the heart of BluePhoneElite. Like its predecessor, BluePhoneElite always undergoes many tweaks and improvements because I guess, Bluetooth connectivity is a bit tricky to program. The program does have a debugging option so when I encounter problems, I make a debug file and send it to the developer.

OS X's Address Book is a reliable Bluetooth-SMS sender but if you need to control your phone a bit more, BluePhoneElite is an application to watch.

SonyEricsson phone owners have another option: PhoneAgent. PhoneAgent is a much more robust application designed for the SonyEricsson phones. The demo version looks good but is severely crippled.

Tofu 1.2

Tofu.gif

Another updated favorite is Tofu. Tofu is a freeware text reader that arranges content into columns for easier reading. Tofu has been my default text reader. This new version adds saving, rich text font scaling, localization fixes, and other miscellaneous bug fixes.

PulpFiction 1.1.1

mail_interface.jpg

My favorite RSS reader has been updated. Lately, I have been experiencing some data corruption like miscounted posts and overlapping posts. I kept on checking freshsqueezed for an update but there was none. On the day I didn't check, PulpFiction 1.1.1 was released. I've already installed it and the errors are gone!

I like PulpFiction for its Mail-like interface. Like an email client, PulpFiction can retrieve RSS news once they are posted (of course checking interval (mine's 30 minutes) have to be defined too).

I've tried the "traditional" way of by-site reading of RSS feeds but I find this too limiting. It's more fun to read news as they happen.

Lots of updates

Lots of updates for my favorite software have come out over the weekend. I wanted to post them all in one bunch in this entry but I thought each one should get the attention it deserves. The next few articles will be about these apps.

Video iPod rumor

ipod,black.jpg

So now there's a video iPod rumor. It's an eventual evolution of the iPod, I think. But then there's this predicament... what to prioritize to store? Pictures or music?

If all this is true, the "viPod" (as I'd like to call it... long "i" sound), can also be used as a portable presentation pack if used together with an LCD projector.

Here's the full rumor at ThinkSecret.

And no. That's not an actual picture of the viPod, it's just a 3G iPod from PojoArt.

My PDA history

Pilot
I was trying to remember my PDA history and I think this is the most accurate sequence of events:

1997 - Pilot 1000
1997 - PalmPilot
1999 - Visor (blue)
2000 - IIIC
2000 - Vx
2000 - Visor (black)
2000 - m100
2001 - N710
2001 - T615
2002 - NX70V
2003/10/8 - UX50
2004/5/5 - TH55/E

Radio broadcast my RSS!

Finally, I can see the radio broadcast icon rss-new.png in Firefox. Why the change? It's based on this "bug:"

Fixed: 261354 - RSS button icon for Live Bookmarks was too geeky, too big, and looked like it said "ASS". It was replaced with an icon depicting a radio broadcast.

EDIT:

The icon looked familiar ... suddenly I remembered where I saw something similar: OS 9's Airport icon!

freeiPod engraving

A lasting reminder of the true cost of that free iPod:
free iPods

Besides the usual amount of
spam, “lost” orders, and general sketchiness you may have to deal with, you might also be getting a little something extra you didn’t bargain for when you thought you could score free iPods from FreeiPods.com: a nice little reminder engraved on the back of where you got your new bauble from. Seems that Gratis Networks, the outfit behind this whole thing, has been using the Apple Store as a source for the iPods they’re giving away (and yes, we’ve established this is more or less for real, that doesn’t mean we want you posting all your referral link spam everywhere), and lately they’ve been making sure that “freeiPods.com” gets engraved on the back of a bunch of them.

[Via
Cult of Mac]
@Engadget

Nothing that some Scotchbrite scrubbbing won't remove -- that is if you're really selfish enough to spam people just so you can get this "free" iPod.

Apple pushes iMac G5s in the Philippines

Apple pushes iMac G5s in the Philippines:
Apple has ramped up its marketing campaign in the Philippines for its recently introduced iMac G5, reports The Inquirer...

Great news to my friends out there! I do hope there are price promos.

Firefox builds

I like to tinker with programs. For Firefox, I periodically check The Burning Edge... a blog about Firefox nightly builds.

New Gmail features

Here are the newest Gmail features and my comments:

* Gmail Notifier
Why only for Windows when other Gmail notifier developers offer versions for OS X?

* Search your contacts
This is basically an enhanced address book.

* Automatic forwarding to another email account
This feature is a bit tricky. Gmail says that it's offering it for free during the testing phase. That means this feature will have to be paid for in the future.

* And finally... Save Drafts!
Saving drafts is a common practice for me while blogging. I like drafts because they're like digital scratch paper.

What will the final Gmail be? I'm seeing it continue to offer 1GB of space but how much more will it offer for paid accounts? Gmail may be free but so far, I'm seeing that Apple's paid service, .mac slowly but surely offering more value-added features.

Podcasting

How-To: Podcasting (aka How to get Podcasts and also make your own):

This week’s How-To is a three part special complete with our
first Engadget “Podcast” MP3. The first part is how to get “Podcasts” on your iPod. So what’s a Podcast? To put it simply, a Podcast is an audio file, a MP3, most likely, in talk show format, along with a way to subscribe to the show and have it automatically delivered to your iPod when you plug in to iTunes. The show isn’t live, so you can listen to it whenever you want.

Doc Searls may have said it best: “PODcasting will shift much of our time away from an old medium where we wait for what we might want to hear to a new medium where we choose what we want to hear, when we want to hear it, and how we want to give everybody else the option to listen to it as well.”

For the second part of the how-to you can listen to a Podcast we made featuring
Lenn Pryor and Phillip Torrone. It’s about 40 minutes long, and we’re thinking about doing one each week (let us know what you think, this was just a test).

The third part of the how-to is about making your own Podcast. Think of this as DIY Radio. We looked around for resources, and while there were many ways to do this, most required buying some sort of sound software application, so for our how-to we’re using a Mac, GarageBand (came free with our Mac), and two free sound tools.

Read more at Engadget.

It's really nice to see how people can find fun things to do with our tech toys! This interesting article is by Phillip Torrone at http://www.flashenabled.com

The Tungsten T5

t5box.jpg

I will be getting a PalmOne Tungsten T5.

The features I like are all in there: 320 x 480, desktop mounting, Bluetooth, and Mac support. After some thought, the T5 has awakened in me the same love for simplicity in a PDA... the same feeling I had when I got my USRobotics Pilot.

I am not abandoning my TH55/E. It's just that suddenly, I'm seeing that it's too powerful for my needs.

Well, we'll see how it goes when my T5's here.

The Newton OS

The Newton O.S. Creeps Toward New Hardware:
GraWil writes "As previously reported, the Apple Newton refuses to die! The Worldwide Newton Conference 2004 has wrapped up (photos) and, thanks to Paul Guyot, there is real hope for an emulator. His talk, titled 'Newton never dies, It only gets new hardware,' describes and shows the Einstein Emulator, that will eventually allow the Newton OS to be built and run on top of Unix. Will your next Linux PDA boot Newton OS next year?"

-Slashdot

Made me sit up and smile.

Rethinking the T5 issue

What I just posted at 1src...

Brian

Good points, Brian. I'm now actually thinking that the T5 is the new Pilot. Remember how simple yet effective and useful the Pilot was? I've realized the T5 is like that.

The T5 reminds me of AppShelf. I wrote earlier: AppShelf is enough for me already, even before this update. I believe I'm using all of its features and it fits my needs. I'd rather have a simple, full-featured launcher rather than a bloated launcher with features I won't use.

What if I change it to this:
The T5 is enough for me already. I believe I'm using all of its features and it fits my needs. I'd rather have a simple, full-featured PDA rather than a bloated one with features I won't use.

PalmOne seems to be moving back to the basics and I'm ready to try and see what the T5 has to offer.

Photoshopping an optical illusion

checkershadow

One of the best optical illusions that is so difficult to accept is Edward Adelson's checkershadow.

I fired up Photoshop and loaded the image. I then cut out a portion of square B and pasted it as a layer. From there, it was easy for me to drag the cutout. Putting the cutout on top of square A proves that A and B are indeed of the same color. For a dumbfounding effect, try dragging the cutout all around the checkerboard and see how the cutout seemingly changes its shade.

I also used the Eyedropper Tool. Both A and B are #6B6B6B or in RGB: 107,107,107.

Here's the explanation (and other cool optical illusions).

The TH55

I looked at the specs of the new Tungsten T5. The TH55 clearly blows it out of the water. At $399, the T5 does not offer anything that exciting. Desktop mounting is an old feature of the Clies, so is WiFi capability which the T5 surprisingly left out. I have a strange feeling that the T5 was PalmOne's belated answer to the TH55. Sony sadly did not know what they had!

I know that Sony is no longer manufacturing the TH55, much more the TH55/E with Bluetooth, but if you could get your hands on one, get a TH55... you'd never regret it.

folding@home

I tried using folding@home so that I can contribute in protein folding research. (This is after all, a more urgent matter compared to the seti@home project). However, the application eats up a lot of CPU power... almost always 90%. I've uninstalled it hoping that a newer, less processor-hungry application would be available soon.

From folding@home:

Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

Just a clarification, I'm using the graphical client. I'll checkout the screen saver and command line versions and will report the results soon.

UPDATE: I've finished testing the screen saver and command line versions ... they too, demand a lot from the CPU.

Optical Illusions

rotsnake.gif

I saw this site before but it's worth visiting again. It's currently being slashdotted so it might take some time for the entire page to show.

from Slashdot:

Suchetha writes "In anticipation of a slow news day i would like to direct the Slashdot hordes to Akiyoshi Kitaoka's Optical Illusions page. The page also has explanations on why/how they occur (in icky PDF format). The page is on a .jp uni server so they SHOULD be able to handle the herd of rhinos that is ./."

Those Flash "games"

You won't believe how much politically-related flash "games" there are in the Internet. I've banned my students from accessing these games during their free time. The "games" may be funny but basically it's having fun at the expense of others.

It's good to note though, that Flash and Shockwave is a fantastic cross-platform environment that's perfect to bridge the gap between a PC and a Mac users. What I want to see more of is responsibility for the content.

It can be done. Take Orisinal for example.

Firefox 1.10.1

Firefox has been updated to address a security issue. My version now reads: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1

From Slashdot:

_xeno_ writes "Firefox 0.10.1 was released today to fix a security flaw that could potentially allow a malicious site to erase files from the user's Download directory. If you already have Firefox 0.10 installed, you can go to Tools, Options, and choose Advanced, go to Software Updates and choose Check Now to grab the patch."

Search for an all-in-one browser

I wish there's an all-in-one browser that would perfectly fit my needs. Right now I juggle between these browsers.

1. Opera - won't allow me to edit news at 1src.
2. Mozilla - problems rendering RSS feeds
3. Firefox - memory hog, separate email client
4. Safari - won't allow me to edit news at 1src, separate email client, separate RSS reader
5. Camino - fast! but same as Safari complaints

See my predicament?

Engadgeted

engadgetlogo.pdf

I can't believe I forgot to say that I was "engadgeted." Engadget featured my brushed metal iPod last Sept.10th... that is an honor.

Michael's Powerbook

joeypowerbook.pdf

I laugh whenever I see TV shows feature logo-covered Macs. The things used to cover the Apple logo range from post-it notes to stickers. In episode 4 of Joey, Michael's Powerbook logo was at least a bit more creatively hidden.

Powerbook boot problem

A Powerbook's stuck in the startup screen, with the the grey wheel just spinning...

I tried booting thru the Panther CD and was able to Repair the Disk plus Permissions. Permissions were fixed but there were no problems with the HD.

I tried rebooting but it was still stuck in that grey start screen. (I also tried Safe Mode, tried fsck too... booting gets stuck even in Safe Mode! Also tried resetting PRAM and VRAM.)

I tried booting off the CD again and decided to check the Startup Disks available... to my relief, there's OS 9 installed. So I selected that and the Powerbook booted successfully in OS 9.

I wanted to backup the user files right there and then but found out I don't have access to large external storage space.

...did one last search and found this at MacNN ! So I crossed my fingers and did an Archive and Install.

The Powerbook was able to reboot in Panther! Woohoo! I logged in as root and created a new user account that matched the original user account. I logged in again as that user and *everything* was there... restored!

As a background, this is my boss' Powerbook. Someone else tried playing around with it, someone who's not a Mac user. It was a learning experience for them... and for me too.

Thanks for the help and suggestions from my friends at Pinoymac. I've now asked that the office get DiskWarrior in case something worse happens.
